MARSHFIELD, WI., Sept. 14, 2015 – When Lon Krause of Marshfield, Wisconsin created a GoFundMe online fundraising campaign in May, his co-workers and employer knew they wanted to help.
Krause, 45, was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy when he was 13 years old. He has recently reached a major turning point in the progression of the disease, including limited ability to stand and the need for a lift device. For several years, Krause has been using a power wheelchair, but it required numerous repairs. In addition to needing a lift device and new wheelchair, Krause’s home and vehicle demanded modifications as well.
The employees of Nelson-Jameson, Inc., where Krause is employed as an Export Coordinator, decided they needed to step up and help one of their own. The “Keep Lon Moving” committee was formed in June and the fundraising started right away. Some of the fund raisers included a basket raffle at the company picnic, weekly break room bake sales, silent auction, luncheons, bean bag tournament and 50/50 raffles. Sue Krings, credit manager at Nelson-Jameson, Inc., said, “Everyone contributed so willingly because they knew who it was going to help and that all the funds would be greatly appreciated.”
With the help of generous local businesses and Krause’s co-workers, family and friends, the committee raised over $10,000 in just a few short months. "I am overwhelmed by the support of my coworkers and everyone involved. The efforts and donations made truly reflect the kind of company this is and I feel honored and proud to be a part of it. I hope to continue to be a part of this generous ‘family’ environment as long as I can,” said Krause.
Nelson-Jameson, Inc. kindly matched the committee’s efforts and Krause received a check for $20,622 at a company event on September 18. Adam Nelson, vice president of technology at Nelson-Jameson, Inc., said, “Nelson-Jameson has always considered itself a family company and tries to promote that culture, but to see everyone here come together as a family to support Lon in such a generous and heartfelt manner was truly gratifying.”
